My Y Story: Toni

The Cortland YMCA is more than just a gym; it’s a community. And within that community are people, just like you, who are busy changing their life, as well as the lives of the people around them. Every other Monday, the Cortland YMCA will be sharing the story of one of our members, program participants, staff, or donors, giving them the opportunity to tell their Y Story, sharing a glimpse into how the Y has impacted their lives.

“I was really nervous [when I first joined the Y] because I didn’t know anyone. I suffer from social anxiety, but since coming here, it’s gotten so much better. I’m able to talk with people and be myself! It has definitely gotten me out of the house a lot more. I am active and social! I love the classes. It has helped me in a very positive way.

I’m not trying to be cheesy, but you guys helped save my life. When I first started coming to the YMCA, I weighed 650 pounds. I am down to 501 pounds in about a year. A lot of my weight loss is due to Crystal’s [Crystal’ates] class! When I see Crystal, I think of her as a second mom. Jimmy and Dan’s classes have helped tremendously, too. I can now do stairs, and just see so much improvement.

100% of the reason I could come is because of the scholarship [Membership for All] support that made it possible. My mom comes now, and loves the pool and classes, too!”
